Shipping and Quarantine

Shipping Agents

The North American import requirements are standardized and easy to follow once you know the rules.  There are a number of excellent shippers that we are
happy to recommend.  KLM cargo does the most shipping from Holland and Germany and almost all of the shipping agents use them.

What does the shipping agent do?  They provide a number of services
including  24 hour veterinary care in the pre-ship stables.  There is a
requirement that quarantine stables before and after ship and undergoes
official vet inspections to meet specific country regulations.

When you use one of the recommended shippers you can rely on the fact that
the menu before departure day consists
of hand blended mashed with especially added electrolytes with a good dash of
oil to prevent colic.  Just a part of the concierge services provided by Dressage Warmbloods approved shippers

When you get a quote to ship be sure that you know what it includes
does it include pick-up service from the horse location to the shipping
location? Does it include veterinary health certificates and blood testing
as required? Will it include shipping insurance, or do you want to have
that on your policy here?

You need to make independent
arrangements for quarantine, customs
and veterinary services here, in other
words you must have an agent here to receive the horse as it is necessary because they still have to do bloodwork on arrival
and a confirmation of health.

Protect your Investment

Another important aspect of shipping and quarantine is to protect your investment before you ship!  Insurance binders can be issued prior to shipping and reaching your destination to protect your valuable investment.  We just need some basic information and it can be done with one phone call or email.  Pam Moss has licensed as a Broker  CDI OB068980 and is associated with
major equine insurance companies, and can make all these arrangements for you.  Contact her via phone  714-296-9300  or email pamoss7117@sbcglobal.net and she will be happy to assist you.

Quarantine Requirements

All horses must complete a standard arrival quarantine which is located
in three places in the United States – Los Angeles, New York, and Miami.
This takes 2 to 3 days depending on arrival time and necessity for blood
samples for infectious anemia (coggins test) piroplasmosis, glanders
and dourine must prove to be negative.

Blood sampling is not required or generally expected in horses imported
from Western European countries.  Pre-export testing is generally
recommended to prevent any problems upon arrival and this can be
handled when you do the vet check or by your shipping agent. If you
are importing a stallion or mare it is recommended that a blood sample
be pulled and tested for CEM when you do the vet check this will help
move things along.

There are specific requirements and additional quarantine for mares and
stallions more than 2 years of age
(731 days) they must go to special
CEM quarantine facilities in bonded
or sealed transport.  For further
information regarding these requirements please see the UC Davis publication on Global Health and the Sport Horse their link with this detailed
information is http://www.vetmed.ucdavis

Basic quarantine time requirements are as follows  -    Mares are 15 days and Mares with foals are 15 days.  Stallions are 30 days.  Dressage Warmbloods can assist in the reservations and locations for fulfilling these requirements.  In California the most noted of these facilities is located at UC Davis just outside Sacramento and can be contacted  via their website
